Hidden treasure

These Sunday hikes along a new part of the Potomac are becoming a pattern, and I'm not complaining one bit.

The Sunday after Thanksgiving was a gorgeous, warm day and the first few trail parking lots we came to were full. Undaunted, Florian took us to a new one off a side road. This time, I had the sense to document where we were.

As always, Sandy was really good about staying with us and checking in, even when we saw other dogs up the trail.

When I was a kid in the Adirondacks, we would often get a beagle who showed up at our house, having lost its way after straying off track at the Beagle-Hare Club up the road.

Typical beagles! Those things will follow their noses forever.

I adore beagles, but am happy for now to have critters who stick around.

Are your critters creatures of the flock, or do they tend to wander?

What about you pittie parents and fosters--do your pitties follow their noses on the trail, or stay close?

  1. My rotties are really good about staying close and on the trail. One of our hiking pals, an elkhound mix, constantly disappears, but just as we begin to freak out, he just shows up. I'm glad he isn't my dog... :-)

  2. Our boy is great off leash but we don't give him the opportunity often thanks to off-leash laws prohibiting that. It seems the little dogs get away with it, but all I need is someone feeling "threatened" because I have a bulky dog, and then I end up with a ticket!
Yesterday two ladies from the neighborhood came to our door and when I answered all 3 of the kids somehow managed to push past me... well they all jumped up and ran around for a couple minutes until we were able to round them up, but for a second I thought our foster was going to keep running! We don't test the girls too often off-leash, they like running too much :)

  3. Hi Kirsten, we're kind of a "unit". There's 4 of us and we're our own little pack. We'd rather be together but we're also okay being on a leash with our mom or dad or one of our "walkers". My mom says that the shelties would likely stay at their sides although they might get "spooked" and run off (not good) and Owen and I would probably follow our noses or run around free.

  5. Delilah is on the thirty foot leash, some days if I give her a little freedom she comes right back other days....well not so much.

Just today Sampson took off to go and greet another dog! Most days he is VERY good.

    Go figure.

  6. Bella's a wanderer - it's that Beagle part of her coming out. We have to keep her on leash or we'd likely never see her again!

  8. Betsy, our pit mix will not leave my side, she stays close. Nina stays close too. The 2 sibes would say "see you later" and off they would go. Phoebe and Lily, the rat terriers, would venture out a little ways, not too far. Lucy would ride in the backpack. We always keep everyone on a leash for safety.
You have a lovely place to hike.
